Why the Philippines

“The Philippines raked in offshore service generating revenues of $2.1 billion in 2006, placing third behind India and China and slightly ahead of Malaysia.

That's up 62% over the $1.3 billion it gained in 2004, and a huge increase from the start of the decade when the outsourcing industry in Manila employed just 2,400 people and the industry had revenues of merely $24 million. It is estimated that 200,000 people are working in 120 BPO (mostly Contact Centers) in the Philippines in 2006.

Overall, Philippine BPO is forecasted to earn US$11 billion and employing 900,000 people by the year 2010 (Shameen 2006).”

The Philippine government estimates the Philippines could capture 50 percent of the total world English-speaking market in 2008. The reasons for this bullish outlook can be attributed to the following advantages:
Talented resources - The literacy rate in the country is 94.6% - among the highest in Asia. English is taught in all schools, making the Philippines the world’s 3rd largest English-speaking country. Every year, there are some 350,000 graduates enriching the professional pool and of all the Asian and Indian nations, the Philippines have the most westernized culture.
Cost of doing business - Wages are typically less than a fifth of that in Australia. Local communication, electricity and housing costs are also 50% lower. Foreign companies that are now outsourcing programming and business processes to the Philippines estimate 30 to 40% business cost savings, 15 to 30% call center services and application systems and 35 to 50% software development.
Infrastructure - The Philippines offer state-of-the-art telecommunications facilities (full Competition Telecommunications Sector with over 5 carriers), and adequate and uninterrupted power supply. With the government's focus on building up an IT-enabled economy, the Philippines is on its way to becoming the E-services Hub of Asia.
Major companies that already operate in the Philippines include, AIG, AOL, Barnes & Noble, Chevron, Citigroup, Dell, HP, HSBC, IBM, Intel, JPMorgan Chase, Motorola, Procter & Gamble, Siemens AG and Trend Micro.
